Cat L'Hirondelle
Bio
Cat L'Hirondelle is a mixed-media artist who lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She started attending the BFA program at Emily Carr Art School in midlife. During that time period, she was diagnosed with cerebella ataxia thus forcing her to leave art school and make some major changes in her life. As an other-abled person, she frequently experiences being trapped by society's limited views and labels. Her work is intended to get people thinking about their limited perceptions of each other, and to see the humanity in each other. Cat has always dreamt in 3D and regardless of her condition she is compelled to see her visions come alive and continues to do so while also branching into curatorial work.

Artist Statement: Defying Gravity
This piece is about defying gravity and soaring above day-to-day trivialities. Through my imagination and creativity I can surpass the challenges of life in a wheelchair.
The wings are symbolic of trying, problem solving and getting through another day. Most days my wings are on. I may be in a wheelchair but I am so much more than that - I am freakin’ superhuman! But some days I just can’t “do it” and the wings stay up on the coat hook until I am ready to go at “it” again and continue soaring.
I choose to work in metal because I am drawn to its resilience and durability. As a person in a wheelchair I find I need to face life, drawing on my own resilience to conquer obstacles.
